My name is Calvin Mudge. I am a freelance artist who Graduated from the Sequential Art department at Savannah College of Art and Design. I am a lover of nature, history, brown paper, coffee, and well-crafted stories.
As an artist who started out by studying the art of character and visual storytelling, I strongly believe every work of art boils down to "telling a story." A good artist should never stop at “displaying a character or image.” A good piece of character art (regardless of whether it's a comic, sculpture, or illustration) needs to tell the story of who that character is and what they do. A clear statement must be made. What good is a character sculpture or illustration that doesn't use every square inch to make a statement about that character?
As I design characters and concepts, these ideals are my primary focus. I look for the best ways to tailor the design to support its function or personality, while making it believable. What is the story of that character or object? How can it's appearance help tell that story? Everything comes down to story. I have a deep passion for bringing characters and ideas to life and strive to produce quality in everything I do.
